Define the Work Package
A contractor preparing several bids can separate drawing measurement from pricing and bid approval. Begin by identifying the current drawing register, specifications, addenda, requested systems and deadline. State whether the package needs quantities only or a priced estimate.
Organize the Takeoff
Separate fixtures by schedule type, conduit by size and type, and conductors by size and circuit basis. Reconcile panels and distribution equipment with schedules. Record drawing references and distinguish shown routes from assumed routes. List unresolved design questions beside the affected quantities.
Review Supplier Pricing and Labor Assumptions
Compare vendor quotations with the equipment schedule. Check freight, taxes, exclusions, validity and any owner-supplied equipment. Identify the labor basis, working hours, access assumptions and testing responsibilities. Different project conditions can require different productivity assumptions.
Contractor Bid Review
The contractor reviews quantities, current pricing, allowances, exclusions, overhead and profit before submitting a bid. An estimating package does not guarantee a contract award or a margin. Keep base-bid and alternate scope separate, and compare revised drawings with the previous issue before updating quantities.
