Use the project specification as the source
MasterFormat is a classification system for organizing construction information. Use the divisions and section identifiers in the issued project manual. This page is a workflow reference, not a reproduction of the full classification standard or a promise that one division defines a subcontract.
Build a scope register

Check boundaries across sections
A utility run can involve pipe, structures, excavation, bedding and surface restoration. A section classification alone does not allocate every item. Reconcile civil and building connections, equipment supply and installation, temporary work and owner-furnished items against the bid documents.
Review the CSI divisions guide for related discussion. Confirm the current classification and project requirements before issuing a schedule. Document addenda that change specifications or trade boundaries.
